Thanking People = Thanking Allah

Bismillah. We know that thanking Allah (shukr) is through action. So what are some actions that we can do to thank Allah [SWT]?

Narrated Abu Hurayrah [RA]

The Prophet [SAWS] said: He who does not thank Allah does not thank people.

[Abu Dawud]

In other words, whosoever does not thank people, has not thanked Allah.

Suppose someone did you a favor. Either you:

  • thank no one!
  • thank the person but not Allah [SWT]
  • thank Allah [SWT] and not the person
  • thank Allah [SWT] and then also thank the person

In the first three cases, you haven’t thanked Allah! Shukr is thanking Allah and then also thanking the person who helped you! This is because it was Allah [SWT] who made that person a means to facilitate whatever task you were doing. So, just say THANK YOU ๐Ÿ™‚

And if the person is Muslim, then you can take it a step further:

Study for Exams

Bismillah.

Exams are here! Argh. Here’s something I’ve been trying recently to study for exams: studying for exams at the Masjid. Grab one of those small tables and a cushion to sit on, and you’re good to go. There are numerous benefits of studying at the Masjid over studying at the library or at home:

  • If you study at home, most probably you won’t pray in jamat, and if you’re in school, Shaitan may cause you to delay your prayer. When you study at the Masjid, you catch the salah in jamat – and if you’re on top of your game, in the first row with the first takbeer – at the earliest time. These deeds are BELOVED to Allah [SWT]!
  • You catch the time between the adhan and the iqamah. This is a time of acceptance of duas.

“The dua said between the adhan and the iqamah is not refused, therefore offer your duas at this time. ”

[Ahmad, Abu Dawud]

  • Save time, because you won’t have to back-and-forth to a prayer place to pray. In the Masjid, you just get up, pray and then get back to studying.
  • No internet = no distractions
  • No members of the the opposite sex = no distractions (big fitnah at the libraries and on-campus!)

That’s all I can think of. It’s a very interesting experiment, try it if you are a student. In sha Allah, it brings much benefit to the affairs of the dunya and the akhira.

Virtues of Ayatul Kursi: Paradise and More

Bismillah.

One of the greatest gifts that we have been given by Allah [SWT] is that of Ayatul Kursi (the Verse of the Footstool). It is verse 255 in Surah Baqarah (2). Here are some of it’s virtues:

  • A Guarantee of Paradise

โ€œThe one who recites it after each of the obligatory prayers, then death will be the only thing [i.e. barrier] preventing him from entering al-Jannah.โ€ [1]

  • The Prophet described it as the greatest ayah in the Quran. [2]
  • In it the Most Great Name of Allah (ismullahi al-โ€™atham) is mentioned. [3]
  • It protects from the shayatin (devils). [4]
  • The believer who recites it following an obligatory salah is under the Care and Protection of Allah until the commencement of the next prayer. [5]
  • It is the only place in the Quran where the Kursi (Footstool of Allah) is mentioned.

Reasons to Be Patient

Bismillah. A beautiful excerpt from an article titled “Twenty Reasons for Observing Patience Over Wrongdoing” written by Shaikh al-Islam ibn Taymiyyah [RA] and translated by br. Abuz Zubair [H]. This article is a true gem, I’m taking my time in reading and digesting it. Please do so, as well.

From the Intro

The reader should, therefore, realise that these are the words of one who spent nearly his entire life suffering at the hands of his adversaries, and demonstrated to us how to practically forgive and forget, and to rise above the animal instinct of revenge and retribution.

From the Article

There are several things that help one to observe this type of patience:

ย

One: One should realise that God is the creator of all of His servantsโ€™ actions, their movements, their stationary positions and their volition. Whatever God wills occurs, and whatever He wills not to happen does not occur. There is not an atom in the heavens above or the earth below that moves without His permission and His will. Men are merely tools, so turn instead to the One who unleashed them upon you. Do not look to their bad actions towards you, and in doing so, you will alleviate sadness and sorrow.

“I Will Tell You Tomorrow”

Bismillah.

“I will tell you tomorrow”, said the Messenger of Allah [SAWS] when he was asked about the story of the people of the Cave (AlKahf).

He [SAWS] forgot to say in sha Allah. The result? Allah [SWT] delayed the revelation by 15 days. Then, Allah [SWT] revealed the ayaat and instructed His Prophet [SAWS] on the proper etiquettes when scheduling a task for the future:

ูˆูŽู„ูŽุง ุชูŽู‚ููˆู„ูŽู†ู‘ูŽ ู„ูุดูŽูŠู’ุกู ุฅูู†ู‘ููŠ ููŽุงุนูู„ูŒ ุฐูŽู„ููƒูŽ ุบูŽุฏู‹ุง

And never say of anything, “I shall do such and such thing tomorrow.”

Except (with the saying), “If Allah wills!” And remember your Lord when you forget and say: “It may be that my Lord guides me to a nearer way of truth than this.”

[AlKahf:23-24]

So here’s a rule of thumb:

Revive a Sunnah: Protecting Ourselves with Al-Maaniโ€™ah

Bismillah. One of the things we can do to protect ourselves when going to sleep is recite Surah Mulk (67) before sleeping.

  • The Prophet [SAWS] used to do it regularly

Jaabir [RA] reported that the Prophet [SAWS] did not sleep until he had recited Surah Al-Sajdah (32) and Surah Mulk (67).

[Tirmidhi]

  • The Sahabah nicknamed it Al-Maani’ah, meaning that which protects

It was narrated that Abdullah ibn Masโ€™ood [RA] said:Whoever reads Surah al-Mulk every night, Allah will protect him from the torment of the grave. At the time of the Messenger of Allah [SAWS] we used to call it al-maaniโ€™ah (that which protects). In the Book of Allaah it is a soorah which, whoever recites it every night has done very well.

The Days of Tashreeq – Eat, Drink and Be ThankFul

Bismillah.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: โ€œThe days of tashreeq are the days of eating, drinking and remembering Allah.โ€

[Muslim]

The days of Tashreeq are the 11th, 12th and 13th days of Dhul Hijjah. Subhan Allah, here is a very interesting connection between eating, drinking and remembering Allah:

Allah says His Book:

O you who believe! Eat the halal/pure food that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allah, if you truly worship Him alone.

Smile!

“Your smile to your brother is a charitable act. Ordering good is a charitable act. Forbidding evil is a charitable act. Helping a man who has bad eyesight to see things is a charitable act. Removing a stone, rubbish or bones is a charitable act. Emptying your cup in the cup of your brother is a charitable act.”

Muhammad, Peace be upon him.

Hasad: The Fire that Consumes Good Deeds and its Cure

Bismillah.

Hasad (envy and ill-feeling) towards a Muslim brother or sister is a real disease of the heart. Its dangers?

Beware, save yourselves from Hasad. Verily Hasad devours virtuous deeds just as fire devours wood.

[Abu Dawood]

Imagine BURNING your hard-earned good deeds just by having envy and ill-feeling in the heart! Just by harboring hasad in the heart, you’re losing your good deeds as quickly as a fire consumes wood…each and every second!! May Allah save us from this, ameen!

Some Cures for Hasad

  • This beautiful dua

Hasad-Dua

Our Lord! Forgive us and our brethren who have preceded us in Faith, and put not in our hearts any hatred against those who have believed. Our Lord! You are indeed full of kindness, Most Merciful.
