Make Dua!

Bismillah.

Abu Huraira [RA] reported that Prophet صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:
“Whoever would be pleased by Allah’s answering/granting/acceptance to him/her during tough and distressing times should increase dua’a in the easy times”.
[Reported by Tirmidhi and authenticated by Shaikh Al-Albani]

Vocabulary from the Hadith:

الشدائد is the plural of شديدة, and it means a tough, difficult situation.

الكرب is the plural of كرب, and it means depression, distress.

الرخاء means a normal, easy situation

Lessons:

– Everyone wishes that Allah answers their prayers in tough times. The way to guarantee this is by making plenty of consistent dua in easy times.

– Laziness is one thing that deters a person from making dua in easy times. For this, make the dua, “الّلهُمَّ إنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْعَجْزِ وَ الْكَسَلِ” – Oh Allah, I ask your protection from senility and laziness.

– Ramadan is one of the most blessed times to make dua in. Allah says in the middle of the ayat of fasting in Ramadan in Surah Al-Baqarah, “And when my slaves ask you about me tell them that surely I’m close: I respond to the dua of the person making dua when he/she makes dua to Me.” [2:186]

– Some times to make dua are: between the adhan and iqamah, in sujood, after salah, and before iftaar.

– “Whoever asks Allah for Jannah three times, Jannah will say: “O Allah, enter him into Jannah.”” [Tirmidhi]

The Four Chosen Sentences

Bismillah.

A very beautiful hadith,

Surely Allah has chosen four sentences from all speech – 1) Subhan Allah 2) Alhamdulillah 3) La ilaha il-lal-lah 4) Allahu Akbar. So whoever says ‘Subhan Allah’, twenty good deeds are written for him/her and twenty bad deeds are omitted from his/her account. And likewise for ‘Allahu Akbar’ and ‘La ilaha il-lal-lah’. And whoever sincerely says ‘Alhamdulillahi rabbil alameen’ thirty good deeds are written for him/her and thirty bad deeds are omitted from his/her account.

[Reported in Musnad Imam Ahmad]

The four chosen sentences:

1) Subhan Allah – Allah is far and free from all imperfections.

2) Alhamdulillah – All possible praises are for Allah.

3) La ilaha il-lal-lah – There is absolutely no object/deity worthy of any act of worship except Allah.

4) Allahu Akbar – Allah is the greatest.

Enduring Tough Times

To help us endure tough times, here is some prophetic guidance:

The Prophet [SAWS] said,

“When Allah wants good for His slave, He hastens the punishments/tests in this world. And when he wants bad for His slave, He delays his punishments/tests due to his sins until he arrives on the Day of Judgement with his sins and gets punished then.”

Going to Salah in Peace

Bismillah.

The Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم said,

“When the Iqamah is pronounced, do not come to the prayer running. Come to the prayer walking calmly and with tranquility. For when one of you is walking for prayer, he is, in fact, engaged in prayer. Then join in what you catch of the prayer, and complete what you miss of it.”

Immediate Istighfar

Bismillah. A very nice hadith that I received in my email:

Abu Umaamah reported from the Messenger of Allah (sallahAllaahu alayhi wasallam) said:

إِنَّ صَاحِبَ الشَّمَالِ لَيَرفَعُ الْقَلَمَ سِتَّ سَاعَاتٍ عَنِ الْعَبْدِ الْمُسْلِمِ الْمُخْطِئ – أَوْ الْمُسِيء – ، فَإِنْ نَدِمَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ اللهَ مِنْهَا أَلْقَاهَا ، وَإِلاَّ كُتِبَتْ وَاحِدَهً

“The occupier of the left raises [and holds] his pen for six hours from the Muslim servant of Allah who has wronged or committed a mistake. So if he regrets and seeks Allah’s forgiveness from it he returns it back, and if that is not the case then it is written as one.”

Source: Mu’jam al-Kabeer: 7765, Saheeh Jam’i as-Sagheer: 2097 – Imaam Albaanee said it is hasan.

When a Muslim sins, the angel who writes the bad deeds (ashabul shimaal – the companion/occupier of the left) is supposed to write that down as a bad deed. But instead of doing so right away, the angel waits for a reasonable time (note: it mentions six hours in the hadith, but that doesn’t necessarily mean 360 minutes exactly) waiting to see if the sinner repents to Allah. If he does, then the sin is not written as if it never happened.

And if he doesn’t, it is written as one bad deed.

It’s never too late for repenting. And the best time to repent is right after the sin or soon after. It almost feels like hypocrisy to be making istighfar (repentance to Allah) right after committing a sin, but that is nothing more than a trap of Shaitan. In fact, Allah describes the people of Jannah as, “Those who when they commit a sin or wrong themselves remember Allah right away and ask for forgiveness for their sins.” [Surah Al-e-Imran (3)]. May Allah make us of those who repent from sins immediately, ameen.

What is the Best Prayer Before Allah?

Bismillah.

What is the best prayer before Allah?

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said: The Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The best prayer before Allaah is Fajr prayer on Friday in congregation.”

Narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu’ab al-Eemaan; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 1119

Remember that Prophet [SAWS] said that if a person knew the merits of salah of Fajr and Isha in congregation, they would crawl to it if they had to. The Fajr of Friday is even better since the Prophet called it the best prayer before Allah.

What are some steps to ensure that we never miss Fajr in the masjid, in particular the best prayer before Allah?

  1. Realize the importance of this deed and prioritize it over everything else. For example, is checking email really that important late at night?
  2. Set an alarm. If one is not sufficient, set multiple alarms. This is a handicap, but insha Allah, eventually a person starts waking up on their own without an alarm.
  3. Sleep early if you have trouble waking up for Fajr. Again, realize the importance of the Fajr prayer in the masjid and ask yourself, “Is staying up late chilling out better, or sleeping early and praying Fajr in the masjid?”
  4. Sleep light. Don’t make your bed super-comfortable. Tune-in to the sound of the alarm or adhan and wake up as soon as you hear it.
  5. Read the Prophetic adhkar and sleep on your right side as in the sunnah.

Any more suggestions? Please feel free to comment.

Help Your Brothers and Sisters

Bismillah.

This is really sad. There are Muslim refugee families in Houston that are in the following conditions:

1- Families going without food for days.
2- Families who get eviction notices and are left on the street.
3- Teenagers taking the role of the bread earners.
4- Kids going in a state of depression.
5- Families 14 of them living in a 2 bedroom apartment.
6- Doctors, engineers (even PhD’s), and businessmen who lost everything and are trying to start their lives all over again at gas stations!
7- Widows crying out of thankfulness when they receive some aid.
8- Families giving up their religion because Churches offer them support in exchange of their religion!

Yes, this is in America! Don’t believe me? Watch the video below

A very good organization called Al-Amanah are trying to help get these families back on their feet. And our friends at HalfDate are having a drive to support Al-Amanah.

Please help the Muslim refugees by making a dua and posting it in the comments section on HalfDate (a sister will donate 1 Canadian dollar when you do so), blogging about it (someone from HalfDate will donate $5 for each post, just put a link in the comments section on HalfDate) or by donating as much as you can.

Remember that the Prophet said,

“Save yourselves from the Fire by giving charity even if it is with half a date, and if that is not possible, with a good/kind word”.

[Bukhari]

Don’t let this opportunity slip. Remember that these people are OUR brothers and sisters. Would you ever leave your blood brothers and sisters in such a situation?

Revive a Sunnah: Hijama For Diseases

Bismillah.

What happens when someone gets a headache or they feel sick? Either they take some medicine hoping for immediate relief, or they visit the doctor. But what did the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم do?

Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that the Messenger صل الله عليه و سلم was cupped on his head for a unilateral headache while he was in Ihraam.

[Bukhari]

Anas ibn Maalik reported that the Messenger said, “Indeed the best of remedies you have is cupping (hijama)…”

[Bukhari]

Abu Hurairah reported that the Messenger صل الله عليه و سلم said, “If there was something excellent to be used as a remedy then it is cupping (hijama).”

[Sunan Abi Dawud, Sunan Ibn Majah]

Hijama (cupping) is one the strongest sunnahs of the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم, but how many of us even think of it as a cure for our diseases? How many of us even know that something like hijama exists?

What is Hijama?

Hijama (حِجَمَة) comes from the root al-hajm, which means “sucking”. Cupping (hijama) is the process of applying cups to various points on the body by removing the air inside the cups to form a vacuum. This vacuum sucks out the diseased blood which is then poured into the cups by making small cuts to the skin and then disposed.

When performed properly, this is a safe process and there are no health risks in the process (unlike acupuncture, for example).

Proven Sunnah of the Prophet

Allah has made an amazing cure for us for all diseases in hijama. The Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم got hijama on his head, on his foot [Ibn Majah], on his neck [Abi Dawud], on his hip [Abi Dawud], etc.

The angels recommended to the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم that he recommend hijama to his ummah.

Abdullah ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم said, “I did not pass by an angel from the angels on the night journey except that they all said to me: Upon you is cupping (hijama), O Muhammad.”

[Saheeh Sunan ibn Majah]

Abdullah ibn Mas’ud the angels said, “Oh Muhammad, order your nation with cupping (hijama).”

[Saheeh Sunan Tirmidhi]

Benefits of Hijama

Hijama is not just a reactionary medicine for a disease. It is actually a preventative measure that prevents diseases, in it is a cure for all diseases by the permission of Allah, it strengthens the memory, improves the intellect and prevents blood from getting hot [Ibn Majah]. For a list of ahadith on hijama, please click here.

Action Needed

Given hijama‘s importance, its benefits and that its a proven sunnah of the Prophet صل الله عليه و سلم, we must revive this sunnah in our lives by finding practitioners of hijama and get it performed on us.

Lastly, please spread the khair by:

  • Forwarding this to anyone who you know will benefit.

“Whoever guides anyone to goodness, his reward shall be the same as those who follow his guidance without lessening a bit of their reward.” – Rasool Allah [SAWS]

Hadith Islam Prayer Salah

Even if they had to crawl…

Bismillah.

What could be so valuable that you would CRAWL to it to get it?

The Prophet said,

“If they knew the merits of Salat after nightfall (`Isha’) and the morning (Fajr) Salat, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

And he said in a similar hadith,

“No Salat is more burdensome to the hypocrites than the Fajr (dawn) prayer and the `Isha’ (night) prayer; and if they knew their merits, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so.”

[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

The reward of praying Isha and Fajr in congregation is that of praying the whole night. On top of this, the Prophet said that people would crawl to the salah of Isha and Fajr if only they knew its merits. If this doesn’t push us to attend Isha and Fajr in congregation, what will?

The munafiqoon (hypocrites) had the most trouble with Isha and Fajr. If we experience this difficulty as well, perhaps its a sign of nifaaq lurking somewhere within us. The fix? Start praying Isha and Fajr in congregation. May Allah give us all the tawfeeq, ameen.
