Help Your Brothers and Sisters

This is really sad. There are Muslim refugee families in Houston that are in the following conditions:

1- Families going without food for days.
2- Families who get eviction notices and are left on the street.
3- Teenagers taking the role of the bread earners.
4- Kids going in a state of depression.
5- Families 14 of them living in a 2 bedroom apartment.
6- Doctors, engineers (even PhD’s), and businessmen who lost everything and are trying to start their lives all over again at gas stations!
7- Widows crying out of thankfulness when they receive some aid.
8- Families giving up their religion because Churches offer them support in exchange of their religion!

Yes, this is in America! Don’t believe me? Watch the video below

A very good organization called Al-Amanah are trying to help get these families back on their feet. And our friends at HalfDate are having a drive to support Al-Amanah.

Please help the Muslim refugees by making a dua and posting it in the comments section on HalfDate (a sister will donate 1 Canadian dollar when you do so), blogging about it (someone from HalfDate will donate $5 for each post, just put a link in the comments section on HalfDate) or by donating as much as you can.

Remember that the Prophet said,

اِتّقُواْ النَّارَ وَلَوْ بِشَقِّ تَمَرَةٍ
فَمََََنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَبِكَلِمَةٍ طَيِّبَةٍ

“Save yourselves from the Fire by giving charity even if it is with half a date, and if that is not possible, with a good/kind word”.

Don’t let this opportunity slip. Remember that these people are OUR brothers and sisters. Would you ever leave your blood brothers and sisters in such a situation?

A Great Da’wah Initiative: Gift Bags for New Muslimahs

I got this in an email from an Imam in Toronto. Please try to help out in any way you can (spreading news about it, donating, etc.) Remember that its from the sunnah of the Prophet to help out new Muslims, especially those in need, like Salman Al-Farsi.

General Idea

As support of new Muslimahs in the Toronto area, the team have created gift bags for them. In a gift bag, they include items such as hijabs, musallahs, a Quran with English translation, a book on how to pray salaah, a book about women in Islam, a book of duas, and a book of guidelines for new Muslims.

Some History

The team made 100 bags last year which were all distributed throughout the year. The sisters really found them useful and practical.

How to Help

Contact the sister leading the project at saarauddin [at] gmail [dot] com.

Remember that, “Whosoever intercedes for a good cause, will have the reward thereof; and whosoever intercedes for an evil cause, will have a share in its burden. And Allah is Ever All-Able to do everything.” [AlNisa:85].

Kudos to the Muslim Association of Calgary for this wonderful initiative. This is better than a hundred rallies, in my opinion.

Making Interest-Free Student Loans a Reality

I had written about bringing interest-free student loans to Canada before. Now its time to make it a reality.

Team RICE, which includes members of the MSA, has been selected as a potential finalist for the RBC Challenge Competition to bring Interest-Free, 100% Islamically Compliant student loans to Canada. This project is endorsed by Dr. Azeemuddin Subhani of Islamic Finance Advisory Board. The proposal summary is available below and on the website link. If this Team is voted in, we might be one step closer to interest-free financial products being offered by mainstream banks in Canada.

Please click here and vote for Team 3. You can vote once every day up to Jan. 21st!

Please also share this news on Digg, StumbleUpon, Facebook and Reddit.

Bringing Interest-Free Student Loans to Canada

Anybody who is going to University will tell you how difficult it is to manage expenses (unless your parents are filthy rich). For Muslims, it’s even more difficult since we cannot accept loans or contracts that have interest in them. Here’s a potential solution:

Inspired by emails sent by Muslim brothers/sisters who wanted to avoid haram and get out of interest-based loans, we decided that it is about time someone started showing the Canadian community benefits of interest-free banking by using student loans as a starting point. Being involved in the RBC Challenge as part of our Masters program gave us a great channel to push this idea forward.

We are trying to figure out a business model that is completely interest-free and at the same time provides a win-win situation. There are still a number of kinks to figure out and that is why getting feedback from the community is so important. The survey results will help us immensely in putting together a value proposition for RBC.

If implemented, this product will help students acquire student-loans that have no interest associated with them. This will especially help students who are religiously-averse to dealing in interest transactions.

Please contribute your opinions by filling out this 10-Question survey and sharing it with as many people as possible (it should about 5 minutes). We hope to start compiling survey results by November 15th:

Please fill in the survey, it takes at most five minutes, in sha Allah.
