Looking for a Taqwa boost? Say a Trueword!

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا

O you who believe! Have taqwa of Allah and always speak the truth.

Allah [SWT] commands us to have taqwa of Him and then commands us to speak the truth. So, Allah [SWT] is linking taqwa with truthfulness and thus a means of increasing our taqwa is speaking the truth. So here’s a tip: speak the truth always! What other benefits are there of saying a Trueword?

Interestingly, the preceding verse commands the Muslims to not be like Bani Israeel, who slandered Musa [AS]. Allah [SWT] lifted the false accusations off of Musa [AS] and cleared him of the slander. Those of Bani Israeel who slandered Musa [AS] had two problems: they had no fear, no consciousness, no taqwa of Allah and they spoke lies.

Allah [SWT] then proceeds to command us to do the opposite: have taqwa of Allah and speak the truth. This sharp contrast magnifies the importance of having taqwa and of speaking the truth, and also shows how speaking lies will lead a person to decrease in taqwa (as the case with Bani Israeel) and how conversely, speaking the truth will lead a person to increase in taqwa.

And what else?

يُصْلِحْ لَكُمْ أَعْمَالَكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ ذُنُوبَكُمْ

He will direct to righteous actions and forgive your sins…

So, speaking the truth will increase the taqwa, will lead to more righteous actions and will result in the forgiveness of sins due to the infinite mercy of Allah! Is there anything else that we really need?

May Allah make us of the truthful, ameen!

Mashallah. That was nicely explained. Just to confirm how truthfulness leads to more Taqwa is an ahadith of Prophet Muhammad (SAW): That truthfulness leads to piety, and piety leads to paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth till he becomes a As-sadik (not sure abt this word).
Anyways, thank you so much for the article. Jazak Allahu Khairan
